The US Department of Transportation Headquarters serves as the anchoring structure of the larger Southeast Federal Center Master Plan. The site plan extends New Jersey Avenue to Tingey Street, recreating 3rd Street as a pedestrian street—and links to the Anacostia River’s other waterfront developments. Lee and Associates had a major role in forming the series of public plazas offering these civic spaces for community events and setting the precedence for the future development in this area; and featured a prominent fountain to serve as both a main attraction, and site security installation. Working with Museum Exhibit designer, an educational/art component was integrated into the site as well through a Transportation Walking Museum allowing visitors to learn about the history of transportation in the US. This project won the ASLA Merit Design Award.
