• 9-11 Memorial Grove at Kingman Island / WASHINGTON, DC

Sacred Landscapes + Spiritual Places

Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001 the US Forest Service conceived the Living Memorials Project, to support the development of “lasting, living memorials to the victims of terrorism.” Lee and Associates teamed with Dirtworks to develop a concept that commemorates the events of 9-11 by celebrating nature; inviting and rewarding exploration; and promoting efforts to create and maintain a healthy environment. The grove is a part of several broader endeavors; to restore a vibrant ecosystem to Kingman Island, to reconnect the city to the Anacostia River, and to strengthen neighborhoods throughout D.C.
